There were several impressive Monitor lizards (over a metre long) at the Whitsunday National Park - they weren't at all interested in the beach goers fortunately.
... no, not us! These stromatolites/rocky looking fossilised lumps at Shark Bay are the oldest and simplest forms of life on earth, dating back 4 million years.
These amazing layered sedimentary rocks near Port Arthur look like Inca paving stones, having eroded over millennia into oblong blocks about 40cm high. Australian geology/geography is really interesting and varied.
